Making the Outdoors Accessible: Hippocampe All-Terrain Wheelchair Review

A lightweight, award-winning outdoor wheelchair that makes beaches, trails, snow, and even shallow water accessible. Our family's real-world experience with the Vipamat Hippocampe.

The Vipamat Hippocampe is an all-terrain wheelchair designed for outdoor adventures. Since 2002, it has been helping children and adults with disabilities access beaches, pools, hiking trails, and even ski slopes — places that are usually out of reach with a standard wheelchair.

Key features:

  • All-terrain access: Handles sand, trails, snow, and shallow water. It floats, making safe transitions into swimming possible when conditions are appropriate.
  • Multiple propulsion options: Can be pushed, towed, or self-propelled (better suited for taller users). A push bar or traction kit makes it easier for companions to assist.
  • Comfortable design: The seat uses thick, hydrophobic foam that doesn’t absorb water and dries quickly. The frame tubes are sheathed so they don’t heat up in the sun.
  • Adaptable: Optional add-ons include a ski kit for snow, low-pressure balloon wheels for soft sand, lateral supports, and even a sun canopy.
  • Portable: Lightweight (~37 lbs/17 kg), fold-down backrest, and removable wheels make it easier to transport and store.
  • Durable: Built with seawater-treated aluminum and stainless steel components for rust resistance.

Our family’s experience:

We’ve used the standard setup with mountain-bike-style rear wheels and the included front balloon wheel. This worked well for supervised shallow water play (2–3 feet). We haven’t tried the ski kit or full balloon wheel set, but both are available for families who spend more time on snow or sand.

One upgrade we recommend is adding the parking brakes — they make transfers and loading/unloading much safer.

Pros:

  • Expands access to beaches, trails, and shallow water
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Comfortable, user-friendly design
  • Adaptable with multiple configurations

Considerations:

  • Not self-propelled for most children — caregiver input usually required
  • Price and accessories can add up
  • Storage/transport still requires planning despite foldable design

Bottom line:

The Hippocampe has been a game-changer for our family’s outdoor play. It isn’t perfect, but it makes adventures on sand, snow, and trails possible — and fun.
