Adaptive Tricycle for Kids: Our Family's Review

We've used a fixed-drive adaptive tricycle for several years to help our son pedal, build strength, and ride safely alongside siblings. Here's our honest family review.

The Amtryke® Pro Series 1412 is a therapeutic adaptive tricycle designed for children who need extra support with cycling. With its fixed drive system, the pedals keep moving as long as the bike is rolling — which means the rider can’t coast, but instead gets the full therapeutic benefit of completing each pedal rotation. This design helps kids who might otherwise have trouble with smooth, continuous motion.

Key features:

  • Fixed drive system: No coasting; pedal motion continues as long as the trike is moving. Great for strength-building and therapy.
  • Customizable: Wide range of seats, handlebars, and accessories to ensure the rider feels safe, secure, and supported.
  • Therapeutic focus: Helps children practice range of motion, build coordination, and enjoy the independence of riding.
  • Durable design: Available in signature Amtryke red, built to last with consistent parts and accessories.
  • Assembly required: Bikes ship unassembled and must be fitted to the child.

Our family’s experience:

We’ve used the Amtryke 1412 for several years now, and it has been both fun and therapeutic. It may be time to size up soon, which speaks to how much it has grown with our child.

Two features we’ve especially appreciated are the attendant brake and push handle, which add a layer of safety and control for caregivers. The trike gave our son the chance to ride alongside his siblings, and the fixed drive has been excellent for building strength and coordination.

There are a few small quirks: the foot straps can get caught under the wheels during transport if they’re left dangling, so we’ve learned to close up the Velcro straps before loading it into the car. It’s a predictable but avoidable annoyance.

We had our rider professionally fitted for the Amtryke by a physical therapist (as the company strongly recommends). This ensured the right adjustments for safety and effectiveness. We also considered Freedom Concepts bikes, which were excellent but more expensive and had longer lead times.

Tips for families:

Pros:

  • Strong therapeutic value with fixed drive
  • Highly customizable with seats/handlebars
  • Attendant brake + push handle add caregiver safety
  • Durable, well-supported in the adaptive cycling community

Cons:

  • No coasting; children who fatigue quickly may struggle without supports
  • Assembly may be required
  • Foot straps can get stuck in wheels during transport if not secured
  • Price can still be significant, though often lower than alternatives

Bottom line:

The Amtryke Pro Series 1412 has been a reliable, adaptable trike for our family. It helps kids pedal independently, build strength, and feel the joy of riding a bike. After several years of use, we’re now looking at the next size up — a sign of just how much it’s been part of our journey.
